We have explored countless options that were over-priced, that had very little coverage, and that claimed to cover, but did not. It was a very tough task to complete but we are proud to say that we have All-Risk cargo coverage for our hemp shipments.
Understanding Cargo Insurance
When choosing your transportation partner, it is important to choose wisely. Most companies do not have hemp-specific cargo insurance. It is very important to request a copy of their insurance and call their agent to ensure that it covers industrial hemp.
Another misconception is the value of the cargo insurance. A lot of sales reps will tell you that they have $1,000,000 coverage on their shipments, but really they have $100,000. How can they do that? Well, they do have $1,000,000 in Liability Insurance but this does not cover your cargo. It is important to locate the cargo or contingent cargo insurance on their policy to see the actual amount.
The final, and most important, item to locate on your transportation companies insurance certificate is the words “contingent cargo”. The contingent means that they shift the liability of cargo insurance to their carriers (drivers) insurance. If the carriers insurance does not cover hemp, then your transportation companies insurance will not cover it.
