Less-than-truckload (LTL) is a common reference to shipping something that doesn’t consume a lot of space, say under 6 pallets. The remaining space is consumed by another shipper. LTL is a more economical and environmentally friendly way of shipping cargo that is too large for UPS ground but too small for a dedicated truck. LTL would be a great solution for smaller shipments of hemp biomass or hemp flower but unfortunately they aren’t quite yet open to it yet.
FedEx, XPO and Old Dominion, the three largest LTL companies, have all come out and stated that they will not move hemp in its fiber or raw form. FedEx has specifically stated that they will not ship anything derived from from hemp including CBD products.
Other issues you may experience with XPO, FedEx, and Old Dominion Hemp shipments are frequent delays for a multitude of reasons, damages due to constant handling at each terminal, risk of your cargo getting lost and not to mention the vague coverage of their insurance. With the increased risk and using LTL hemp shipping company’s, like Old Dominion, for Hemp shipping far surpass the lower price they offer.
So how are companies shipping hemp their smaller shipments?
Sprinter vans. Sprinter vans offer a great solution for smaller hemp shipments. We find that customers like sprinters because they can often travel 1000-1200 miles without stopping so if you have a shipment that is 21 hours away then your shipment would be there in 21 hours.
Sprinter vans are also secured with security alarm systems so that your cargo stays safe. If you don’t want to take a risk with LTL then we always recommend checking out sprinter van options.
